Iron infusion referrals
GPs consulting at Rutledge accept referrals for iron infusions from GPs and other health professionals.
How it works
- 1Initial consultation. A GP reviews the patient’s blood tests and checks whether an iron infusion is needed. If an infusion is the right treatment, the patient signs a consent form at this appointment.
- 2Infusion day. If an infusion is needed, it is booked for a later day.
Please include in the referral
- Patient name, date of birth, phone number and Medicare number
- Recent iron studies and full blood count
- The reason for referral, such as oral iron not tolerated or not effective
- Pregnancy and gestation, if relevant
- Current medicines and allergies, including any past reaction to iron

Address the referral to a practitioner by name, or to the next available practitioner. Once the referral arrives, reception will contact the patient to book and send them a new patient form.
Thank you for your referrals. The treating practitioner will send you a letter after seeing your patient, so you are kept up to date with their care.
